We meet at the Balti Jaama Market hall, drive to Paljassaare with the bus, hike along the boardwalk to the top of the peninsula, where there are two observation platforms. We observe various birds on the platform and in the surroundings through a spotting scope and binoculars, learn about bird ecology and migration, different bird species, and the general picture. The observation takes place mostly while standing in one place, so warm clothing is recommended. In between, there is a tea and cookie break, and after an hour of observation, we set off back towards the city.

Paljassaare Nature Reserve on the Kopli Peninsula is one of Tallinn’s most valuable natural sites, offering a rare opportunity to experience species diversity and birdwatching in an urban environment.

This area of ​​European importance offers magnificent views of reedbeds, coastal meadows and the sea.

Located on a migratory route, the reserve has recorded 227 species of birds, which is a very high number. A 550 m long boardwalk hiking trail has been built for visitors, which runs through a diverse landscape and allows them to explore nature on foot or by bicycle (Visittallinn.ee)

Birds are especially abundant on Paljassaar during spring and autumn migration (April-May, August-October). Throughout the summer, there is also a fairly high bird species diversity.

Birds that can be seen: ducks/waterfowl: Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Teal, Garganey, Gadwall, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Long-tailed Duck, Common Eider, Common Merganser, Bewick's Swan, Whooper Swan, Mute Swan, Slavonian Grebe, Great Crested Grebe

Waders: Spotted Redshank, Wood Sandpiper, Common Redshank, Lapwing, Dunlin, Curlew Sandpiper, Temminck's Stint, Little Ringed Plover, Common Ringed Plover, Whimbrel, Curlew

In the reeds, you can also see the Western Marsh Harrier, Spotted Crake, Water Rail, Eurasian Bittern. The Bearded Tit and Penduline Tit also show up sometimes (Birdlife of Paljassaare)

These are protected bird species in Paljassaare that can (but may not always) be seen.
